Looking for an Arbuckle Mountains weekend getaway that has a little adventure, a little history, and plenty of time to slow down?

The Arbuckle Mountains make an easy escape. Waterfalls, scenic drives, local favorites and outdoor adventures are all tucked into this beautiful corner of southern Oklahoma—and you don't need a week to enjoy it.

Here's an easy 2-day itinerary for a weekend near Turner Falls, with Bluebird Cottage as your home base.

Friday Evening: Arrive, Unpack & Slow Down

Welcome to the Arbuckles!

After checking into Bluebird Cottage, don't feel like you need to immediately head back out. Part of a good weekend getaway is actually enjoying where you're staying.

Unpack, kick off your shoes and settle in.

If you're ready to explore, head into Davis and grab dinner at one of the local restaurants. But if you'd rather stay put after traveling, bring along your groceries and cook dinner right at Bluebird. The cottage has a full kitchen with a refrigerator, stove and oven, microwave, cookware, dishes and utensils, plus a charcoal grill outside.

Then pour your favorite drink, gather around the fire pit or slip into the hot tub and relax under the Oklahoma sky.

Tomorrow is for exploring. Tonight is for slowing down.

Saturday Morning: Start With Turner Falls

Wake up, make some coffee at the cottage and head to Turner Falls Park.

Bluebird Cottage is only about a mile from Turner Falls, so you can get an early start without spending your morning in the car.

The 77-foot waterfall may be the star of the park, but don't stop there. Take some time to explore the trails, caves and the ruins of Collings Castle overlooking the area.

Bluebird Tip: Check Turner Falls Park's current hours, admission information and rules before your visit. During busy times of year, going earlier in the day can make for a much more enjoyable experience.

And remember—Turner Falls does not allow pets, so plan accordingly if your little four-legged traveler came along for the weekend.

Saturday Afternoon: Choose Your Own Adventure

This is where your weekend can go in completely different directions.

Want more adventure? Spend some time exploring the Arbuckle Mountains, visit Arbuckle Wilderness or find another outdoor adventure in the area.

Prefer something a little slower? Head toward Sulphur and visit the Chickasaw Cultural Center or explore Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

One of the beautiful stops in the recreation area is Little Niagara. It's a wonderful place to walk, take pictures and simply enjoy being outside.

And don't worry about trying to fit everything into one weekend. There's far too much to see and do around the Arbuckles for that.

Consider it a good excuse to come back.

Saturday Evening: Dinner & a Bluebird Night

After a full day of exploring, you have another decision to make: go out or stay in?

The Davis and Sulphur area has plenty of local places to grab dinner, from barbecue and burgers to Mexican food and other casual favorites.

Or pick up groceries on your way back and make dinner at Bluebird. Cook something in the kitchen, throw dinner on the charcoal grill, and enjoy an evening when nobody has to worry about where you're going next.

Then it's time for a Bluebird night.

Turn on some music. Play a game. Sit around the fire pit. Soak in the hot tub.

Maybe do absolutely nothing.

This is the part of the weekend that doesn't need an itinerary.

Sunday Morning: Coffee, Breakfast & One More Adventure

Don't rush your last morning.

Brew a pot of coffee or make a cup with the Keurig, then fix breakfast in Bluebird's full kitchen. Pancakes, bacon and eggs—or something as simple as cereal and coffee in your pajamas.

Sometimes being able to have a slow breakfast without packing everyone into the car is one of the nicest parts of a getaway.

After breakfast, enjoy a little more time at the cottage before checkout.

If you're not quite ready for the weekend to end, there are still plenty of things you can do on the way home.

Take a scenic drive through the Arbuckles, spend a little more time in Chickasaw National Recreation Area, stop for a local treat or explore one of those places you noticed yesterday and said, “We need to come back there.”

Sometimes the unplanned stops end up being the best part of a road trip.

Why the Arbuckles Make a Great Arbuckle Mountains Weekend Getaway

One of the best things about this area is how much is packed into a relatively small space.

You can see a 77-foot waterfall, explore castle ruins, hike through ancient mountains, learn about Chickasaw culture, visit natural springs and still have time to sit in a hot tub before bed.

It's enough adventure to feel like you went somewhere—without needing a vacation after your vacation.
