There’s something special about the Arbuckle Mountains in the fall.

As summer heat gives way to cooler days, the hills begin to change, the crowds start to thin, and southern Oklahoma settles into a slower, cozier season. It’s the perfect time for scenic drives, waterfall views, hiking, exploring—and ending the day somewhere warm and comfortable.

If you’re looking for a fall weekend getaway in Oklahoma, the Turner Falls and Arbuckle Mountains area deserves a spot on your list.

See Turner Falls in a Different Season

Turner Falls is beautiful any time of year, but fall brings a completely different atmosphere.

The rugged Arbuckle Mountains provide a beautiful backdrop as autumn colors begin appearing around the park. Cooler temperatures also make exploring the trails and overlooks much more comfortable than during the heat of summer.

Of course, the centerpiece is still the 77-foot waterfall, but don’t stop there.

Take time to wander through Collings Castle, explore the trails, discover caves and viewpoints, and enjoy the scenery throughout the park. Even if swimming isn’t on your fall itinerary, there’s plenty to see.

And if you’re staying at Bluebird Cottage, all of this is only about a mile away.

Explore Chickasaw National Recreation Area

A short drive from Davis takes you to Chickasaw National Recreation Area, another beautiful place to experience fall in southern Oklahoma.

Spend a few hours exploring favorites such as Little Niagara, Buffalo Springs and the historic Lincoln Bridge, or simply slow down and enjoy the wooded trails, streams and changing leaves.

Fall is a wonderful time to visit because cooler temperatures make walking and hiking more enjoyable, while the quieter season lets you experience a different side of the park.

Keep an eye out for the area's bison, too. A stop at the bison viewing area is always worth adding to the drive.

Take the Scenic Route

One of the best things to do in the Arbuckle Mountains in fall requires no schedule at all.

Just drive.

Roll down the windows, turn on your favorite playlist and explore the winding roads around Davis, Sulphur and the surrounding countryside. Limestone hills, rocky outcroppings, colorful trees and unexpected views make the drive part of the getaway.

This is one of those places where taking the long way around can be half the fun.

Add a Little Adventure

Fall doesn’t mean the outdoor adventures have to stop.

Depending on seasonal schedules and weather, you can add even more to your trip with nearby attractions such as ziplining, off-road adventures and hiking.

Or skip the adrenaline altogether.

Browse local shops, grab a cup of coffee, enjoy a leisurely meal in Davis or Sulphur, and spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace. A fall getaway doesn’t have to be packed with activities to be memorable.

Come Back to a Hot Tub and Fire Pit

After a day of exploring, fall evenings are made for slowing down.

At Bluebird Cottage, you can soak in the private hot tub, gather around the fire pit, play games, watch a movie or simply sit outside and enjoy a cool Oklahoma evening under the stars.

The cottage sleeps up to six and combines vintage charm with colorful, playful personality. You’ll also have a full kitchen, Starlink Wi-Fi, Xbox and games, plus our little self-serve honor-system snack and drink cabinet when you’re craving a treat.

And because Bluebird Cottage is located just one mile from Turner Falls, you can spend less time driving and more time enjoying your getaway.
